saying goodbye to EW on friday was really hard. i loved my life when i was there and it was a true dream come true. the only way to deal with it is to know that i'll be back one day. so thats how im choosing to think about it.

i now have 2 weeks to prepare for leaving NY for 5-6 months. after today (listing stuff, chilling out, babysitting) im going to make my list of things to do here before i leave. no need to pack until a few days before. it could be really fun (hopefully, otherwise my OCD self will be crawling up walls) my last weekend i'm visiting kate in NJ, which is prob what im most excited about.

im going to miss a lot of things about the city but im so excited about spending some time back home.

MTV is doing the time warp on a remake of 1975 cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Lou Adler, exec producer of the original film, is partnering with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios on the new rendition. Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original. Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced.

Get ready for another shot of "Hairspray." New Line Cinema has made a deal with "Hairspray" creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to summer 2007’s hit musical feature. Planning to return are director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film. No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of "Hairspray" had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010. "Hairspray" grossed more than $200 million worldwide and served up a strong-selling DVD and soundtrack album. The mid-July target would mirror the release of the original, which was replicated this summer by "Mamma Mia!"

If the Dark Knight were truly a dark film, there'd be a lot more dead people in it. As it is, it's brimming with optimism, even more so than its Burton predecessor, which cascaded through its final 30 minutes like a coked-out Prince song, all style, no real depth... just like the decade that brought it to fruition. Nolan's Batman is a product of the times, a clear-headed sobered up post-9/11 truth-sayer. It's not a pessimist... simply a realist. If things appear, how should I put it, FUBAR... then that's the just the way it is. But it doesn't. Yes, some of the characters we love in this film die. Some appear to die. Some die even when they don't appear to. But isn't that life? What's dark about that? Death is necessary. Death is what makes life interesting. Every death means something in this film. Anid thank god for that. It's been a long time since I've seen a movie where someone's death had led to actually psychological consequences. People are actually affected by death in this film. I suppose filmgoers might be frightened by that, but frankly, I find that far more refreshing and life-affirming than if someone died, and everyone just shrugged and carried on. In Burton's Batman, the only death that changed anyone happened before the timeline of the film. Even the most insignificant death in TDK at least scares the living shit out of people. A museum full of people die in Batman, within a week, the entire town is cheering on the murderer in hopes of bagging some dough. That's fucking dark. That's fucking cynical as holy hell. In TDK, the main villain even waits for the hospital to be evacuated before blowing it up. It seems far more fun for the guy to let be frightened than to let 'em be dead. That may be truly fucked in the head, but at least it gives you a way out. I honestly feel like I should see the film a few more times. It's that good. It needs digesting. That's its main fault. For a 150 minute film, it moves too quickly. Nolan could've slowed some scenes down, given us room to breathe and made the film 3 hours long. The last 20 minutes feel rushed and crammed together. I would've liked more scenes with Gordon and his family, particularly his wife. I would've liked more scenes with Dent. What did the guy do when he was by himself? When he was alone with Rachel? (they're never alone in the film... they seem to catch each other in wisps between business; how does Dent draw any conclusions about their relationship with that kind of interaction? What did they do when the opera got cancelled, for instance?) Remarkably enough, I think what we have with The Joker and Batman/Bruce Wayne is what we have. I feel that they are men obsessed. Their entire lives are what we see. If Bruce has any quiet moments, he's probably stalking Rachel...perhaps a quick scene of him actually watching Rachel and Dent fall in love... perhaps a moment where this dawns on him and he seems caught in the middle of a motivation. As for the Joker, I think his most revealing and perfect moment is in the last five minutes we see him. Will the character have an arc? A moment of humanity later on, based on what the good people of Gotham have demonstrated? Will he fight it? Or will he simply focus it... with someone who shares his interests (Harley Quinn, anyone?). The film leaves too many thoughts and too many choices, and not just about the film itself, but about us and ourselves, and that's what makes it a great film. It's cerebral like that. We may question the film, we may question the filmmaker... but most importantly, we question ourselves.

Night falls for Media Rights - Shyamalan teams for producing deal

Media Rights Capital and M. Night Shyamalan have formed the Night Chronicles, a financing/production partnership intended to generate one thriller per year for three years. Shyamalan will produce but not direct, marking the first time he will produce a film he didn't write and helm. Shyamalan will create the stories and ideas for the films and pick the writers and directors; MRC will finance. Shyamalan and MRC will co-own the copyrights and retain artistic control. Two factors in particular attracted MRC to the filmmaker: Shyamalan typically generates more movie ideas than he can execute, since he writes, directs, produces and often acts in the films he makes. And he has a track record of bringing his films in on budget. The new venture marks the first major deal for Tory Metzger since she left CAA to become prexy of MRC Films, and she expects that Shyamalan will be very hands-on with the Night Chronicles product.

Zach Braff is checking out of Sacred Heart Hospital. This upcoming season of "Scrubs" will the actor's last, said showrunner Bill Lawrence at Wednesday's Television Critics Assn. press tour panel. The ABC Studios series arrives on the Alphabet this season after seven seasons on NBC. There was no announcement whether this would be the last season of the show, but it will be Braff's. The actor said he would be open to returning as a guest star, and could possibly also direct. He has been attached to indie movie "Open Hearts" as actor, writer and director. "The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital," Lawrence said. "When you leave, it's about holding on to your relationships." When asked how long "Scrubs" would go on, he said, "You can't kill this show."

"Saturday Night Live" star Amy Poehler is in final negotiations to join the cast of the new post-"Office" laffer from Greg Daniels and Mike Schur. Series, despite initially being called an "Office" spinoff, isn’t expected to be one after all — confirming speculation that the show would not be an extension of the original but a whole new series (Daily Variety, June 12). Poehler would join the already-cast Aziz Ansari, who became the series’ first cast member last month. In recent weeks Daniels and Schur have been busy mapping out the show, which is set to bow this winter in the plum Thursday night 9:30 p.m. timeslot behind "The Office."

Whedon's 'Horrible' in high demand - Made-for-Web musical takes iTunes' top spot

Joss Whedon's made-for-Internet tuner "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" was a little too popular in its debut late Monday night. First installment of the three-part program -- starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day -- bowed at 10:30 p.m. PST as a paid $1.99 download via Apple's iTunes or free Web streaming via Drhorrible.com. Shortly after midnight, the Dr. Horrible website crashed under the punishing demand of some 200,000 hits per hour. "Dr. Horrible" also ranked No. 1 on iTunes TV downloads for most of the day Tuesday. Whedon's brother Jed spent the wee hours of Tuesday morning lining up a much bigger server to handle the traffic, and he dealt with encryption issues that were preventing Joss Whedon buffs in Oz and other offshore locales from accessing the content. The Dr. Horrible site was back up and running by early ayem West Coast time. Second installment of "Dr. Horrible" is set to bow Thursday, with the concluding seg bowing Saturday. The entire program will be available for free streaming through midnight Sunday and through July 29 on iTunes. Given the program's splashy debut based only on word of mouth and Internet buzz, Whedon's reps are lining up a soundtrack release deal and a DVD distrib deal.

Quentin Tarantino seeks 'Bastards' - Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio rumored for roles

Quentin Tarantino's Weinstein Co. film "Inglorious Bastards," which has already garnered plenty of media coverage, is about to get more interesting. The producers are searching for a co-financing partner to handle offshore territories for the WWII drama with intersecting storylines. Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein will meet with five studios from Friday through Tuesday. After the director met Brad Pitt in France on Tuesday, those studios are already salivating over the expectation that Tarantino will land Pitt to play the key role of Aldo Raine. They'll be even keener if Tarantino's plan to meet Leonardo DiCaprio for another lead role goes well Thursday. Tarantino wants DiCaprio to play the role of Hans Landa. Several studios said the script is vintage Tarantino and they're eager to be in business with him at a reasonable price. DiCaprio and Pitt would be appearing in a Tarantino-helmed project for the first time, though Pitt previously spoke Tarantino-scripted dialogue in a small but memorable stoner turn in the Tony Scott-directed "True Romance." Pitt, who read "Inglorious Bastards" before studios, seems a strong logistical fit for the project. The film will shoot this fall in Germany and also in France, where Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been residing.
